Established in 1996, Camp Hope was the first camp for HIV-positive children in Texas. Camp Hope provides HIV-positive kids ages seven to 16 from low income households the opportunity to develop important life skills needed to manage a life with HIV/AIDS in a healthy and secure environment. For one week campers learn the importance medical adherence, how to manage disclosure of their status in relationships and with their peers and how to deal with stigma – but most importantly, our campers experience a week of fun, barrier-free activities and quality time with their friends.
AIDS Foundation Houston – Stone Soup
Recipient of $5,000 Award
Stone Soup is a donation based and volunteer driven program providing food assistance to HIV-positive individuals and their families. For persons living with HIV, access to nutritional foods is of dire importance. Proper nutrition strengthens their bodies’ ability to fight infection and maximizes the effectiveness of anti-retroviral medications.
AssistHers
Recipient of $6,000 Award
AssistHers, Inc. strives to support lesbians with chronic illness and disabilities live as normally as possible. Using a care team approach, they provide non-medical support in the clients’ home. The support includes light housekeeping and lawn care, transportation, running errands for and with the client. Most importantly, our clients benefit from the socialization and community of seeing a team member at least once a week which helps to prevent social isolation that happens so often with chronic illness.
Bayou City Performing Arts
Recipient of $5,000 Award
Bayou City Performing Arts was founded as The Montrose Singers, Inc. in November 1979. In 1992, the name was changed to Gay Men’s Chorus of Houston. Now BCPA is the umbrella organization for a family of community choruses which include: Gay Men’s Chorus of Houston, Bayou City Women’s Chorus, and Bayou City Chorale.
Bering Omega – Oral Health Clinic
Recipient of $7,000 Award
Bering Omega’s Oral Health Clinic has been addressing the oral health needs of one of Houston’s most vulnerable communities for 28 years when no one else would. It has grown from a small grassroots effort of four very concerned volunteer dentists in the early AIDS crisis, into a world-renowned agency, while disseminating their methods to doctors and health care officials throughout the world. It is the only HIV-specific dental clinic in Southeastern Texas, as a part of Bering Omega’s comprehensive continuum of care for people living with HIV/AIDS.
Bering Omega – Omega House
Recipient of $11,500 Award
Omega House offers palliative (comfort) medical care, behavioral health support, and psychosocial, and bereavement services for PLWHA who are dying and their loved ones. Donated items along with more than 150 individuals volunteering their time help keep overhead costs low. Sandy Stacy, RN oversees eight full-time employees – four nurses, three nursing aides, and an admissions coordinator as well as several volunteers, that offer 24/7 patient care from palliative medical to social support. In 2014, Omega House reports serving 41 clients and providing 2,413 days of compassionate, end-of-life care. Since 1986, Omega House notes it provided palliative and end-of-life care to more than 1,300 men and women living with the final stages of AIDS.
Epsilon Xi Gamma, Inc. – L.Y.F.E.
Recipient of $3,000 Award
Epsilon Xi Gamma exists to provide an opportunity for community conscious collegiate and accomplished lesbians and allies to utilize our unique, valuable, and relevant skills to make a positive and lasting impact to the community. The LYFE (LGBT Youth Finding Excellence) mentoring program focuses on preventing homelessness by working with youth at economically disadvantaged schools.
Homeless Gay Kids Houston
Recipient of $8,000 Award
Homeless Gay Kids – Houston’s mission is to provide a dependable, safe place where homeless LGBT kids under 18 can find support and access to services that will help them survive and thrive. Its current project is a drop-in center that will be open every day to provide for kids’ immediate needs as well as a place where they can learn life skills for a better future.
Houston Gaymers – Project Blue Shell
Recipient of $4,000 Award
Houston Gaymers is a 501(c)(3) that was founded in May 2009 to help provide the LGBT+ and their straight allies with a safe haven and social network to find other like-minded individuals and to make strong life-long social bonds. Houston Gaymers partners with Texas Children’s Hospital with an annual toy drive, which Project Blue will supplement specifically with a custom gaming ‘box’ for bedridden children in recovery from chronic disease or injury.
Houston Pride Band
Recipient of $5,000 Award
Houston Pride Band was formed by a small group of musicians in 1978 as a way to make new friends and to provide entertainment for Houston’s gay and lesbian community. The band is a member of the Lesbian and Gay Band Association (LGBA), a national musical organization made up of over twenty-five bands across the nation and around the world. With LGBA, members of the Houston Pride Band have been able to participate at every Gay Games, three Presidential Inaugurations, and conferences throughout the world.
HRC Foundation – Houston Welcoming Schools Program
Recipient of $5,000 Award
The HRC Foundation is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) that conducts research, education and outreach programs that are funded by individual donors, planned gifts, private and corporate foundation grants. The foundation writes and distributes research-based publications and resources on public policy topics of interest to the LGBTQ community. These research publications are in-depth resources for developing LGBTQ-friendly policies and practices. The Welcoming Schools program works to make Houston schools be more accepting to LGBTQ students.
Lesbian Health Initiative
Recipient of $18,000 Award
LHI is dedicated to eliminating barriers to healthcare and promoting health and wellness for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT)- identified women and transgender men through Education, Access and Advocacy programs. LHI’s healthcare access programs include two Health Fairs a year on the first Saturday in June and November. At the Health Fairs and with our partners, LHI provides LGBT culturally competent care and free mammograms, pap, comprehensive blood, blood pressure checks, heart and vascular risk assessments and other healthcare information and services for LGBT women and transgender men who are uninsured or under-insured.
Montrose Center – Holiday Baskets
Recipient of $3,500 Award
Holiday baskets are part of the Montrose Center’s Emergency Pantry program, which provides food and hygiene supplies year-round to clients who are homeless or suddenly displaced from their homes, in emergency shelter due to domestic violence, recently released from jail/prison, and other types of housing transition. The program fills the gap for clients who cannot, due to their circumstances, gain immediate access to existing food assistance programs. Clients typically receive a week’s supply of ready-to-eat food items that require no cooking/preparation; as well as a “Personal Care Kit” which includes a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, soap, shampoo, razors, socks, undergarments, a comb and feminine hygiene products if needed.
Montrose Center – Senior Housing Project
Recipient of $5,500 Award
The Montrose Center is embarking on a capital campaign to build an affordable, housing community with support services focusing on the needs of low-income LGBT seniors. Led by honorary campaign co-chairs, Mayor Annise Parker and State Representative Garnet Coleman, the Montrose Center’s “There’s No Place Like Home” campaign is committed to raising $6.5 million in private funds over the next three years to support the development of a LGBT-affirming affordable senior housing complex and senior center in Houston’s historic Third Ward. The complex will be located at 2222 Cleburne, less than three miles from the Texas Medical Center and 1.3 miles from the Montrose Center on two existing Metro bus routes and the proposed light rail University/Blue Line.
Montrose Grace Place
Recipient of $18,000 Award
Grace Place is a safe, welcoming environment for vulnerable homeless youth of all sexualities and gender identities, providing nourishment, healthy relationships, and hope for the future. For one night a week, it is a place for them to experience dignity and respect, with a good meal, creative activities, referrals to social services, and healing relationships with safe, accepting adults.
Montrose Softball League Association
Recipient of $5,000 Award
The Montrose Softball League Association is dedicated to the promotion of amateur softball for all persons regardless of age, race, creed, religion, sex, income or national origin with emphasis on the participation of members of the LGBT community of Greater Houston. The goal of the Player Safety Program is to reduce risk of injury to League participants by sponsoring certified bats for all games.
Out For Education
Recipient of $10,000 Award
Out for Education is one of the most successful LGBT scholarship-granting foundations in the U.S. dedicated to the purpose of raising scholarship funds for disenfranchised LGBT youth. Having granted more than 200 scholarships valued at nearly $1.4 million through the 2012-13 academic year, Out for Education’s contribution to Houston’s LGBT youth is fundamental to the continued development and re-affirmation of their self concept.
Pet Patrol
Recipient of $5,000 Award
Pet Patrol, a people pet partnership, is a volunteer based, 501 (c)(3) organization that recognizes the proven health benefits of companion animals and is dedicated to preserving the human-animal bond. Its mission is to assist limited income elderly and those affected by chronic or life-threatening illnesses in the Houston area by helping care for the pets with whom they share their lives.
PRIDE Charities, Inc.
Recipient of $4,000 Award
Pride Charities, Inc. was organized in 1993 as an outreach of Resurrection Metropolitan Community Church members who wanted to establish a non-profit that would have as its sole purpose, community service. Over the years it has provided strong outreach into the community and offer dialogues on gender identity, “coming out”, relationship issues, and overall wellness, as well as provide community services through our food pantry, clothes closet, and HIV/AIDS financial assistance program.
T.R.U.T.H. Project, Inc.
Recipient of $5,500 Award
The T.R.U.T.H. Project targets the GLBT community and Allies, focusing on creating self awareness and healing through the use of performance arts and social engagement. Addressing issues important to our community and society, this project highlights national and local artist creating original works that will be presented to the community in an out of the box healing experience.
Texas Transgender Non Discrimination Summit
Recipient of $3,000 Award
The Texas Transgender Nondiscrimination Summit is a grassroots effort to look at strategic approaches to the issues of social justice and policy implementation as regards the concepts of gender identity and gender expression. The Texas Transgender Nondiscrimination Summit invites interested parties in higher education to discuss what works and what does not work in regards to codifying inclusion of “gender identity and expression” into institutional policy. The summit serves to find means to this end through discussion of divergent and respective strategies in regard to the inevitable barriers that always arise. We envision this summit as an opportunity to discuss strategic approaches towards social justice issues related to policy inclusive statements. TTNS is a 501(c)(3) organization.
Thomas Street Patients Services
Recipient of $7,000 Award
Harris Health System’s Thomas Street Health Center is a freestanding HIV/AIDS clinic, which provides medical care and psychological and social services to those who have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. Physicians from Baylor College of Medicine and UTHealth provide primary and specialty care services, including: oncology, endocrinology, pain management, dermatology, rheumatology, women’s health, adolescent health, ENT, neurology, and treatment and management of hepatitis C. Thomas Street also has on-site case management, pharmacy, physical therapy, psychiatry and counseling services. Thomas Street Health Center offers an extensive HIV health education curriculum and a variety of HIV/AIDS research initiatives.
