AFH has been reaching out to the LGBTQ community with its community-based education and awareness programs since the founding of the organization in 1982. Over the years, people in the LGBTQ community have benefited from education about HIV/AIDS transmission, learned about various safer sex methods, and been counseled on specific prevention strategies that each person can implement on an individual level to reduce HIV infections.
AssistHers provides a network of support to lesbian women struggling with debilitating or life-threatening illnesses in order for them to live as normally as possible. With most of the AssistHers clients struggling with very low incomes the Supplemental Food Assistance Program provide grocery store gift cards at a rate of $125 per month for groceries and hygiene items only. This program is extremely important with the clients being among the most vulnerable in our community and having special diets due to their chronic illness which can be more expensive.
The Dalton DeHart Photographic Foundation was created to preserve the history of Houston’s LGBTQ Community by chronicling the past 30+ years of events. Dalton has taken hundreds of thousands of photographs, the vast majority on film, that will now be digitized and preserved so that the community will have these images for ever.
HRC Foundation’s Welcoming Schools is the nation’s premier professional development program providing training and resources to elementary school educators to welcome diverse families, create LGBTQ and gender inclusive schools, prevent bias-based bullying, and support transgender and non-binary students. 100% of the Bunnies On The Bayou donation goes directly to support this work at Houston Area Schools.
Lazarus House provides a low or NO cost program to the chronically ill to prevent disease related muscle loss. The Wellness Program, developed to help HIV + adolescents & adults live stronger, healthier lives, is a program of exercise & support to combat muscle loss, provide peer support and motivation, and improve quality of life.
The Lesbian Health Initiative works to eliminate barriers to healthcare and promote health and wellness for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT)-identified women and transgender men through collaborative and integrated Education, Access and Advocacy programs.
The LOUD, Inc. mission is to improve the cultural, environmental, medical, and social health of gay men, lesbian, and transgender people of African descent.We are dedicated to organizing and promoting unity for diverse people of color and we help build an awareness of pride while providing outreach, intervention, and prevention education on HIV, AIDS, and other health conditions prevalent among men and women of color.
NEST is a city-wide effort to prevent and end homelessness among adolescents and young adults who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or questioning (LGBTQ) by 2020. This collaboration—coordinated by the Montrose Center/Hatch Youth, led by Coalition for the Homeless Houston/Harris County and guided by U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development—represents more than 60 Houston/Harris County youth agencies and service providers. The Rapid Rehousing program serves LGBTQ homeless youth by offering them a furnished apartment and a suite of services that support the ability to pay rent, utilities, and cover most expenses such as food and clothes, within 18 months.
Out for Education was founded in 1999. Since our founding, we have become one of the largest funders of LGBT scholarships in America and have awarded over $1.8 million in scholarships to LGBT+ youth in Houston. By investing in our LGBT+ students, we are also investing in the future of the LGBT+ community, both in Houston and across the country.
Each year during the winter holidays The Montrose Center distributes holiday food baskets to its LGBTQ and HIV+ clients in need. The purpose of this program is to provide a holiday meal for persons who are chronically unemployed, seniors and disabled individuals surviving on fixed incomes, individuals in transitional housing after fleeing from abusive partners, and persons who are starting over after recovering from addictions. Every year The Montrose Center strives to increase the amount of holiday baskets to clients in need.
Pet Patrol, a people pet partnership, is a volunteer based, organization that recognizes the proven health benefits of companion animals and is dedicated to preserving the human-animal bond. Our mission is to assist limited income elderly and those affected by chronic or life-threatening illnesses like HIV/AIDS in the Houston area by helping our clients care for the pets with whom they share their lives. The unconditional love of a companion animal is a gift for countless thousands of people living with a challenging illness. Our animal companions provide love, diversion and a reason to get up in the morning. They also provide proven health benefits to their owners.
PFLAG envisions a world where diversity is celebrated and all people are respected, valued, and affirmed inclusive of their sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. We support families, allies and people who are LGBTQ+ with small groups and our HelpLine. We educate by presenting programs and making literature available concerning the unique challenges and issues facing the LGBTQ+ Houston community. We advocate for change in attitudes, policies and laws to achieve full equality.
This program falls under the umbrella of The Montrose Center’s Seniors Preparing for Rainbow Years also known as SPRY. SPRY is a vibrant and growing community of LGBT older adults age 60+, with life-enhancing services to meet a variety of needs unique to our population. The Montrose Diner provides a freshly prepared nutritious lunch three times a week for LGBT older adults, their partners/caregivers, as well as fun activities in an inclusive and friendly environment.
Telling Real Unapologetic Truth Through Healing educates and mobilizes LGBTQ communities of color and their allies through social arts that promote mental, emotional, and sexual health. The TRUTH Project’s work impacts the community by providing a safe space to discuss and share, while offering education, support, and resources for mental health care.
The Brown Bag Lunch program successfully provides a bagged lunch to one hundred patients three days a week at this time. The Thomas Street Clinic is located in at residential neighborhood few food options in the area and none within walking distance. Many of the patients of the Clinic are on medicines that must be taken with food during the day. We function on a limited budget, depending solely on the generosity of donors to continue providing lunches for our patients. Bunnies on the Bayou made it possible for us to continue the Sandwich Program for another year.
The Transgender Foundation of America aims to improve the quality of life for transgender people. Gender Reel Houston is a festival showcasing gender non-conforming, transgender and intersex identities in film and performance art. Gender Reel Houston provides a public platform to tell the stories of these marginalized populations.
