AFH has been reaching out to the LGBTQ community with its community-based education and awareness programs since the founding of the organization in 1982. Over the years, people in the LGBTQ community have benefited from education about HIV/AIDS transmission, learned about various safer sex methods, and been counseled on specific prevention strategies that each person can implement on an individual level to reduce HIV infections.
The Dalton DeHart Photographic Foundation was created to preserve the history of Houston’s LGBTQ Community by chronicling the past 30+ years of events. Dalton has taken hundreds of thousands of photographs, the vast majority on film, that will now be digitized and preserved so that the community will have these images for ever.
Lazarus House provides a low or NO cost program to the chronically ill to prevent disease related muscle loss. The Lesbian Health Initiative works to eliminate barriers to healthcare and promote health and wellness for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT)-identified women and transgender men through collaborative and integrated Education, Access and Advocacy programs.
Out for Education was founded in 1999. Since our founding, we have become one of the largest funders of LGBT scholarships in America and have awarded over $1.8 million in scholarships to LGBT+ youth in Houston. By investing in our LGBT+ students, we are also investing in the future of the LGBT+ community, both in Houston and across the country.
Pet Patrol, a people pet partnership, is a volunteer based, organization that recognizes the proven health benefits of companion animals and is dedicated to preserving the human-animal bond. Our mission is to assist limited income elderly and those affected by chronic or life-threatening illnesses like HIV/AIDS in the Houston area by helping our clients care for the pets with whom they share their lives. The unconditional love of a companion animal is a gift for countless thousands of people living with a challenging illness. Our animal companions provide love, diversion and a reason to get up in the morning. They also provide proven health benefits to their owners.
This program falls under the umbrella of The Montrose Center’s Seniors Preparing for Rainbow Years also known as SPRY. The Montrose Diner provides a freshly prepared nutritious lunch three times a week for LGBT older adults, their partners/caregivers, as well as fun activities in an inclusive and friendly environment.
The Brown Bag Lunch program successfully provides a bagged lunch to one hundred patients three days a week at this time. The Thomas Street Clinic is located in at residential neighborhood few food options in the area and none within walking distance. Many of the patients of the Clinic are on medicines that must be taken with food during the day. We function on a limited budget, depending solely on the generosity of donors to continue providing lunches for our patients. Bunnies on the Bayou made it possible for us to continue the Sandwich Program for another year.
